Drug lords should be responsible for violence and murders- Human Rights Ambassador

Human Rights Advisor of the President’s Office, Ahmed Didi (Sandhaanu) has said that the drug lords spread drugs in the Maldives should be responsible for the murders and violence which is now on the rise in the country.

Ahmed Didi said that drugs are the main factor for the emergence of the many gangs. He added that it is drugs which trigger gang violence and murder.  He said that violence cannot be stopped except by stopping drug trafficking and drug abuse.

Refering to Former President Gayoom;s negelegence and Mohamed Nasheed’s encouragement to the Drugs, Ahmed Didi said that the authorities were sleeping when drugs became widespread in the country like an epidemic. He said that nothing adequate and effective have been so far done to clean the country from illegal narcotics. “While the drugs got widely spread, The Authorities were sleeping in beautiful Palace” he added.

The Human Rights Ambassador of the President’s Office further said that drug abuse can be stopped in the country if it is done sincerely. He said that trained sniff dogs should be brought to Maldives as a first measure against drugs.

“India is ready to provide us with that. I do not know why it is not being done and why it is taking such a long time for it. I cannot think of any good solution to this problem,” he said.

“Death penalty upon the murders should be implemented too. There is a lot that can be and should be done to curb crime and violence. The habit of sleeping during day and staying awake during the night should be changed. Shops should be closed for business at 9 in the night and restaurants should not be open for 24 hours. Police should question those roaming the streets at night,” he said.
