National stability can be restored by taking steps against law-breakers: Ahmed
Thaufeeg
President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s Political Advisor Ahmed Thaufeeg has said that the national stability of the Maldives can only be restored by taking the necessary steps against law-breakers and people who challenge the constitution. He said that there should not be any discrimination in this and whoever commits crimes should pay regardless of his party or popularity.
Thaufeeg criticized the Elections Commission for not taking any steps against the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for challenging the authority of the justice system by stating that they would not accept the judiciary and the courts of law.
He said that there is no reason for the existence of the Elections Commission if they cannot take any steps against MDP for making such illegal and unconstitutional decisions. He noted that the Elections Commission also fails to take appropriate measures when MDP members instigate the people to kill in the official rallies of the party.
“When things go out of hand like this the measures should be taken. Remaining silent is not an option with things have escalated to this level,” he said.
Thaufeeg said that the right to living is the most important human rights of the people and the appropriate measures to protect this right should be taken.
“It is not correct to not take action against Nasheed for challenging the law fearing that Nasheed’s followers might send the pictures to foreign organisations. So what if they send? Steps are taken against people who challenge the constitution and law in every country. So why are we hesitant to implement the law?” he asked.
Thaufeeg said that the government is taking all necessary measures against law-breakers in accordance to the government’s constitutional authority. He urged all institutions to not be hesitant in implementing their constitutional roles.
