Majlis rejects “Bill on Amendments to the Broadcasting Act”


Majlis rejected the “Bill on Amendments to the Broadcasting Act (Act No. 16/2010)” today. Thirty one MPs voted against endorsing the bill, far exceeding the twelve votes cast in favor. There were six abstentions.

The bill had been proposed by Ibrahim Riza, MP for Guraidhoo. During debate time in Majlis, eleven MPs had spoken on it.

lenary debate progressed today on two bills proposed by Riyaz Rasheed, MP, for Vilufushi.

The first was “Bill on Amendments to Former Presidents’ Immunity and Privileges Act (Act No. 9/2009)”. 11MPs spoke on the Bill, during today’s debate.  Secondly, the “Bill on Amendments to the Decentralization Act (Act No. 7/2010)” was debated on by 01 MP today.

The committee report on the “Bill on Amendments to the Companies Act (Act No.10/96)”was brought before Parliament. 07 MPs spoke during the debate time, following which the Chair held the Third Reading of the Bill.

Debate also progressed over the committee report on Maldives becoming a signatory of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife Fauna and Flora (CITES). The finalized Report was presented to the floor by Deputy Chair of Committee on National Development Ahmed Shareef, MP. Three MPs spoke on this Report.

At today’s Sitting, debate on the committee report on amendments proposed to Annex 2 of the Standing Orders was closed. These Amendments were proposed by the Committee on Independent Instituitions. It was then reviewed by the General Purpose Committee and presented to the floor. The Report was presented by the Chair of General Purpose Committee, Nazim Rashad, MP, for Thulhaadhoo. Ali Arif, MP, for Vaikaradhoo, proposed two additional amendments to the report.
