No legal barrier in implementing death penalty- MPs

Many members of the Peoples’ Majlis have said that court verdicts on death penalty are not implemented not because of legal barriers in implementing it.

Most of the members who talked in yesterday’s sitting of the Majlis criticized Minister of Home Affairs Dr Mohamed Jameel for not implementing the death penalty upon murderers when there is no legal barrier against it.

Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed said that the verdicts of banishment or imprisonment just not have the details on which to take the convict to the island which he or she is banished to but still these verdicts are implemented.

“Therefore why is that these details become the barrier against implementing death penalties on murders? Why is that these questions on whether the convict should be killed using a sword or lethal injection or a gunshot is stopping the implementation of the death penalty? These are not plausible excuses,” he said.

Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Rasheed said that the implementation of the death penalty is not carried out not because of legal barriers.

“It is because of the cowardice of the institutions established to implement these verdicts. The Police have means to investigate cases. It’s the same people who are doing these crimes. They should be caught and arrested. The Police should make the best of their means. The right to living should be protected,” he said.

Ahmed Rasheed said that the problem faced today is the competitive partisan ideologies that spread among the people with the introduction of political parties. He said that now it began being directed at Majlis members.

Many of the members who debated yesterday at the Majlis raisec concern for not implementing death penalty on murderers.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed said that the problem of increasing crime rate and violence cannot be resolved by only one institution. He said that there should be a joint effort by all relevant authorities to curb crime.
