MPs Pay Tribute to Colleague
Members of represented parties in Parliament on Wednesday paid tribute in memory of their colleague Dr. Afraasheem Ali, MP, who died on Sunday describing his death as a ‘big loss’ to Parliament and country.
The member of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) Dr. Afrasheem Ali,MP, was yesterday laid to rest at the Aa Sahara Cemetary.
Mohamed Aslam,MP, for Maldivian Democratic Party, who read a tribute on the floor of the House condemned the horrific incident stating that there is no room for murderers in our community. He added that we must relentlessly pursue criminals in defense of societal values.
Also, he described the MP as an established academic, and who had a real expertise in complex research which enabled achievements in Parliamentary work.
Abdulla Abdul Raheem, MP, for Progressive Party of Maldives (also paying tribute to the late MP) described him as a steady pillar of strength for the Parliament, and condemned the foul and cowardly actions of his murderers.
He said now is the time to put aside political differences and inquire into safeguarding the security of our people and our future generations.
Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, MP, for Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party, paid tribute to the late MP, saying: “We owe him an immense amount of gratitude for his commitment to the Parliament, and noted on the need to strengthen the criminal justice system.
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim, MP for People’s Alliance, in his tribute spoke with the aim of safeguarding the security of people and recompensing for the loss by placing legislative reform process atop Parliamentary agenda.
He reminded all that we are grieving because of a pointless and terrible death, which exposes a serious rent in the social fabric of society.
Riyaz Rasheed, MP, for National Party also paying tribute to the late MP said his first thoughts are with the family of the late MP, said that it was very sad for the families, and that his sympathy goes out to them.
Abdulla Jabir, MP, for Republican Party implied that this incident has had a devastating effect on the family, wider community and the security services.
Mohamed Zubair, MP, an Independent Member said: ‘I’ve known him personally and professionally through time’. He described him as a close personal friend saying, ‘He was a genuine and kind man who achieved a lot in his community and nationally.’
The Members of all representative parties and Independent Members condemned the murder, in the strictest terms.
