First Democratically Elected President faces trial for breaking the law- Fuwad Gasim

State Minister for Fisheries and Agriculture Fuwad Gasim has said that the first democratically elected President Mohamed Nasheed is facing trial not because he ruled Maldives or was elected as the President but because he broke the law and violated the constitution during his rule.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Fuwad Gasim said that some of the local media which promote the former President Nasheed has been deceiving the international media regarding the reason why Nasheed is facing persecution.

Fuwad said that it is very clear to all that Nasheed is facing trial because of him abusing his powers during his three year rule and committing crimes after his resignation.

“Although this is clear as daylight, some people are hatching schemes to bring Nasheed back to power and introduce the freedom to practice other religions in Maldives and to threaten the Islamic harmony of the people. However, the people of Maldives will never give them that opportunity, Allah willing,” he said.

Fuwad said that anyone who abuses power and violated the law will face charges no matter how democratically he was elected. He said that no one has the right to break the law and commit crimes.

“In democracies like America, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia when a person is elected democratically but commits crimes and breaks the law he will face persecution. Some international media do not have the correct picture regarding the matter,” he said.
