No confidence motion on President stems from the issue of GMR- Adeeb

Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb has said that the no confidence motion against President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan submitted at the Peoples’ Majlis by MPs representing the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) stems from the stance of the government regarding the issue of the GMR contract.

Minister Adeeb made this remark in reply to a question raised by Miadhu Daily. He said that he became certain of it when the opposition MPs submitted an amendment to the Standing Orders of the Majlis to make the votes taken in the no-confidence motion against the President to be a secret vote.

“In comparison to other amendments proposed this particular amendment is sent to the agenda of the Majlis floor quiet faster. The moment it was proposed its put on the agenda. As is said here among the locals, ‘maximum’ efforts and speed are put on this issue,” he said.

Adeeb said that all who strive sincerely for this nation has to take heed of this matter. He said that it is of utmost importance to give precedence to freedom over financial benefit.

“Look at the situation of Nigeria for that matter. It is a country rich in crude oil. However, the people are still in hunger, starvation and poverty. Why? Because of the Shell company,” he said.

Adeeb said that most of the problems faced by the country today stems from the irresponsible decision of the former government to sign an agreement with GMR under dubious conditions.
