Majlis Ethics Committee submits case of damages to chamber assets to Police


The Peoples’ Majlis Committee on Ethics has submitted the issue of misconduct by some Members of the Majlis and damages caused by them to some assets of chamber at the First Sitting of the First Session of the Majlis on 19 March 2012 to Maldives Police Service.

The case of misconduct and damages to chamber assets by MPs of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on the day President Dr. Mohamed Waheed delivered the Presidential Address was proposed by Galolhu Dhekunu constituency MP Ahmed Mahloof. The proposal was supported by Fonadhoo constituency MP Abdurraheem Abdullah.

Five members from the ten present at the meeting of the Committee on Ethics voted in favour of MP Mahloof’s proposal to send the case of misconduct and damages done to the assets of Majlis chamber by MPs of MDP. Chair of the Committee on Ethics did not participate in the vote.

Fonadhoo constituency MP Abdurraheem Abdullah said that the damages done to the Majlis property on that 19 March 2012 caused the Majlis to delay the sessions of the Majlis and it was the most shameful day in the history of the Majlis. Abdurraheem noted that MDP MPs tore down the national flag behind the Speaker's Chair, took the Speaker's Chair out of the Chambers  and spat on it, sang and danced on the Speaker's podium, and obstructed the Speaker from entering the Chambers.

The damages caused to the assets of the chambers include, damages to 15 name boards, mic systems, voting cards, administrative desks, desks and touch screens.
