Majlis accepts emergency motion calling to take action against Zaki
The Peoples’ Majlis has accepted the emergency motion tabled by Thimarafushi constituency MP Ahmed Shareef of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) which called to take action against Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, former SAARC Secretary General and Special Envoy of former President Mohamed Nasheed, for his remarks made to media during his visit to India which included statements that could threaten national security.
Zaki made some remarks during a recent visit to New Delhi about the GMR contract which he said is being threatened by Adaalath Party. The former SAARC Secretary General described the party as a religious extremist group which has links to alQaeda. He also said that the Indian forces would be “on the ground” to defend GMR agreement in a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government.
The emergency motion proposed by MP Shareef was accepted by the Majlis with 22 members voting in favour or it while nine members voted against it.
Thimarafushi MP Shareef said that Zaki’s statement regarding bringing Indian forces to defend GMR is a matter of grave concern and immediate action should be taken against him. MPs of the government coalition parties accused Zaki of being a traitor and should be punished for betraying the nation.
MPs of the opposition MDP said that the emergency motion against Zaki is part of the campaign for upcoming election for the vacant seat of Ungoofaaru constituency in the Majlis. Chairperson of the MDP, Hulhuhenveiru MP Moosa Manik (Reeko) said that rather than the Indian forces, the United Nations forces should be brought to Maldives because of the existence of religious extremists.
