President will end GMR issue soon- National Alliance


The National Alliance has revealed that the President Dr Mohamed Waheed has sought legal counsel regarding the issue of reclaiming Ibrahim Nasir International Airport and the President will act upon the decision of the people regarding the matter soon.

This was revealed by the National Alliance meeting the media after presenting 35000 petitions to the President. The petitions were presented to President Dr Mohamed Waheed by President of the Adhaalath Party Sheikh Imran Abdulla who is also a leading activist of the “Maldivians’ Airport for Maldivians” movement.

A demonstration was held at the Artificial Beach with the participants carrying national flag before presenting the President with the petitions at the President’s Office.

When the participants who were marching from the Artificial Beach to the President’s Office was stopped by the Police near the Bank of Maldives only the leading activists of the steering committee of the “Maldivians’ Airport for Maldivians” movement went to the President’s Office to present the petitions. The steering committee also presented the President with a special T-shirt designed for the movement.

After presenting the petitions, State Minister of Tourism Ministry Ahmed Shameem spoke to the media on behalf of the National Alliance. He said that there are many more forms in the islands which will be presented to the President soon.

State Minister of Home Affairs Abdullah Mohamed said that the President assured that he will decide on the matter in accordance to the decision of the people. He said that the President agreed that the agreement of the former government with GMR to lease Ibrahim Nasir International Airport contains many discrepancies and is not in the best interest of the country. He added that the government will resolve the matter soon.

A mass symposium is to be held under the movement tonight at Artificial Beach area.
