Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights Dismissed

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has yesterday dismissed Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed from the post of Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights.

In a letter forwarded to Dhiyana yesterday, President Waheed expressed gratitude for services rendered during her tenure as the Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights.

Some local media quoted a top official of the government saying that Dhiyana was sacked from her post in the cabinet for lowly conduct. However the President’s Office did not reveal any details regarding the reason for dismissing Dhiyana.

Dhiyana was previously the Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). She was the first woman to hold this post since the organization's inception in 1985. She was appointed Secretary-General at the Thirty-third Session of the SAARC Council of Ministers in February 2011, and assumed office in Kathmandu on 1 March 2011.

She also served as the Maldives’ Attorney General, and as the Maldivian Government’s Envoy for South Asia.
