Proposal to make no confidence vote secret on Nov 19 agenda
-No confidence motion against Home Minister withdrawn
The
proposed amendments to the Standing Orders have been put on agenda for the
session of the Peoples’ Majlis on November 19. The proposed amendment to Article
173 calls for an addition of a clause to it under the circumstances stated in
Article 172. This would make the vote in Majlis to remove President from office
a Secret Vote. The amendment to Article 177 would make the vote taken in Majlis
to remove a Cabinet Minister from office a Secret Vote also.
MPs have
the authority under Article 123 of the Standing Orders to stress upon committees
for completion of certain work.
So far
only Jumhooree Party has expressed support to these amendments proposed by the
opposition Maldivian Democratic Party.
Meanwhile, the motion of no-confidence submitted by MDP against Home Minister
Dr. Mohamed Jameel was withdrawn by the MDP yesterday. The withdrawal of the
motion of no-confidence was announced by MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim
Mohamed Salih in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis.
