Shahid speaks at the opening session of the 6th CASSP


Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis Abdulla Shahid, has give an address at the opening session of the 6th Conference of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians

President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari hosted a reception to the participants of opening session of the 6th Conference of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Conference, Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis Abdulla Shahid, said that the role of a legitimate and participatory process through which Governments can better serve the needs of its people is important to establish the process of a stable democratization.

The Speaker Shahid, pointed out that the Maldives held its first democratic elections as recently as 2008. The Speaker said that the Maldives would take note of lessons learnt from the experiences and cumulative wisdom of our larger friends within the SAARC Region in its own struggle for democracy.

In his speech, the Speaker paid a special tribute to the two Women Speakers from Pakistan and India, noting on their pivotal role in bringing about guidance and progress to the Association.

The Speaker went on to say that at the heart of addressing tumultuous change lied issues of mutual support and cooperation, because without reliance on each other, there would be no positive outcomes.

In his speech, the Speaker thanked the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari and Dr.Fehmida Mizra, Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan for their hospitality and encouragement to stimulate discussions in the days ahead.
