Implementation of death penalty bill drafted
The Attorney General’s office has revealed that the bill on the implementation of the death penalty has been drafted and will be made public next week.
In a press conference held yesterday at Velaanaage, Attorney General Azima Shukoor said that the bill has been drafted and it’s in the final stage of discussions. She said that it will be then sent to the respective authorities of the state for further review.
Azima said that the draft will be sent to the Peoples’ Maldives after the conclusion of the reviews from the respective authorities of the state. The government has earlier revealed that the draft will be open for public review too.
Azima said that the Islamic Shariah and the laws of the states currently implementing the death penalty were taken into consideration during drafting the bill. She said that the bill does not only include on the ways to implement the death penalty but also how to conduct the investigations of such cases.
The Attorney General said that death penalty is an issue often debated in the public and therefore she believes that the ratification of this bill will resolve the issue of the current cases involving the death penalty.
