India calls for a meeting of the three leaders of Maldives
India has called the three leaders of Maldives to hold a meeting and show to the people the importance of unity.
India made this call in the address of the Indian High Commissioner to Maldives, D. M. Mulay. He made this remark speaking at the celebration held to mark the 47th anniversary of establishment of Diplomatic Relations between India and Maldives.
Mulay said that President Dr Mohamed Waheed and former Presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed have all met with the leaders of India in the period of the past six months and therefore there is no plausible reason that the three leaders cannot hold a discussion among themselves and show to the people the importance of unity for the betterment of a nation.
“Democracy in the Maldives is in its early stages. In this stage the preservation of unity is very crucial. This should be shown to the people. With tumult in the country foreign investors will hesitate to invest in the country. I believe that President Dr Waheed is a very capable leader who can resolve these issues successfully,” he said.
Mulay noted that India has been the closes friend of Maldives since long and India is the foremost in assisting Maldives in the times of need. In this regard, he said that India is closely observing the situation of the devastated islands due to the torrent rains experienced in Maldives and India now.
The celebration of the anniversary of establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the two nations was held jointly by the Indian High Commission, India Club Maldives and the Friendship Association of India-Maldives (FAIM).
The Day marks an important point in the shared history, culture and multi-faceted ties between the two nations in the modern times.
As part of the celebrations, a ‘Friendship Walk’ is being organised on Friday, November 2, 2012, to mark the occasion. The Walk shall start from the Artificial Beach Area at about 4.00 P.M. on and shall proceed along the Bodhu Thakurufaanu Magu, Chandhnee Magu, Fareedhee Magu, Majeedhee Magu and shall end at the Artificial Beach Area before evening prayers time.
