Maldives Establishes Diplomatic Relations with Moldova
Maldives and the Republic of Moldova have formally established diplomatic relations yesterday.
The Joint Communiqué formalizing diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives, by Ahmed Sareer, Chargé d'affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations and by Vladimir Lupan, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations, on behalf of the Government of Moldova. The ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations.
The Republic of Moldova is located in Eastern Europe, between Romania and Ukraine. The country attained independence in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and is now a parliamentary republic with Vlad Filat elected as the Prime Minister in 2009.
Speaking at the ceremony today, both ambassadors expressed their desire to forge closer relations between the two countries and to maintain better coordination in their work within the United Nations.
The Republic of Moldova is the 162nd country to establish diplomatic relations with the Maldives.
