Sir Donald McKinnon concludes his visit to Maldives


Sir Don McKinnon, the Commonwealth Special Envoy, to the Maldives has concluded his official visit to Maldives.

The Commonwealth Special Envoy to Maldives, Rt Hon Sir Donald McKinnon, visited Maldives at the invitation of the government, for constructive talks concerning 

During his visit, Sir Donald met with key stakeholders to discuss the current political situation and to determine how the Commonwealth can best assist Maldives. However the details of the meetings have not yet been disclosed to the public.

Deputy President of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Umar Naseer said that the Commonwealth Special Envoy was informed that the Constitution cannot be amended to hold early elections.

Umar Naseer said that Sir Donald discussed on appointing members who are approved unanimously by all political parties to the national inquiry commission. Umar added that if this is the case then all of the members of the commission will be politicians and this will turn the commission into another Peoples’Majlis where there are many commotions. He said that this was informed to the Special Envoy of the Commonwealth.

He said that Sir Donald have been informed no foreigners will be appointed for the commission. He also said that the Special Envoy was told that CMAG continues to be biased to former President Nasheed’s allegations before the conclusion of the investigation of the commission, then CMAG will be considered a partial, unfair and irresponsible.
