Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that candidates from many of the political parties will run in the 2013 Presidential Election.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the DRP’s new office and activity centre, Thasmeen said that although the current government is a national unity government of many parties, candidates from various parties will run in the upcoming 2013 election.
He said that the national unity government member parties will have different ideologies and different ambitions. He said that even if many parties compete in the election, the parties should consider doing what is best for the people to fulfill the needs of the people.
Thasmeen said that it is important to sustain the coalition and be united up until the 2013 election. He said that although President Dr. Waheed’s government is a national unity government which consists of 6 major political parties and civil society coalition, it is a not a coalition government.
“With Dhivehi Qaumee Party we have signed a coalition agreement. However the parties in the national unity government are not coalition partners,” he said.
Thasmeen said that although there are unacceptable points in the CMAG statements, DRP does not support the resolution tabled in the Peoples’ Majlis to withdraw Maldives membership from the Commonwealth.
Thasmeen also said that his party does not support the talks to take a fee from the people under the Aashandha health scheme.
DRP Leader further said that DRP participated in the national unity government of President Dr. Waheed because of the failure of Nasheed’s administration.
