Dr. Didi requests EC to form Inquiry Commission to investigate “rebellion” of MDP national council

The recently ousted President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Dr. Ibrahim Didi has requested the Elections Commission to form an Inquiry Commission to investigate the “rebellion” of the MDP national council against him.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily after filing the complaint against the conduct of the MDP national council against him, Dr. Didi said that the members of the Elections Commission unanimously agreed that there are no provisions in the charter of MDP that allows the national council of the party to take a no confidence vote against the elected President of MDP and to strip him off his presidency.

With regards to the announcement of MDP interim Chairperson MoosaManik “Reeko” that the elected President Dr. Ibrahim Didi and Vice President AlhanFahmy have been sacked from their posts, Dr. Didi said that he will always work to uphold the cause of MDP and would never want any damage to the party regardless of the crimes perpetrated by some members of the party against him.

“Therefore, I am requesting all members that I am meeting not to do anything that would damage the party. I urge them to stay steadfast within the party,” he said.

Dr. Didi said that this issue was raised to the Elections Commission because the commission is the legal parental body which regulates the affairs of the political parties.

“MDP consists of thousands of members. Thousands of members have been calling me and expressing their concern and worry. They tell me that what happened on April 30th was a crime perpetrated against me. Many are complaining and others are saying that they would leave the party,” he said.

Furthermore, the ousted President of MDP said that the decisions taken by the national council against him and the party Vice President are baseless and that he will do whatever it takes to legally resolve it.

Meanwhile, Dr. Didi has been at loggerheads with Former President MohamedNasheed since Dr. Didi's public statements that he was unaware that Nasheed resigned due to force. Didi has also been at the forefront of calling upon MDP to undertake a reform process to strengthen itself for the next elections. Dr. Didi was prevented from addressing the meeting due to a power cut engineered by Nasheed supporters, sources say. Speaking to media, Dr. Didi said that similar events had occurred during the MDP presidential primaries in 2008 when the then Party President Dr. Munawwar was contesting against Nasheed. Dr. Didi who filled the Fisheries Minister in the MDP Government, is the top ranking elected leader of MDP. According to Dr. Didi, the posts of party Supremo (held by Nasheed since February 8th after he resigned) and Interim Chairman (held by MP ReekoMoosa) are not elected posts, but assigned posts.
