MDP elected President, VP sacked by MDP national council

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) elected President Dr. Ibrahim Didi and Vice President Alhan Fahmy has been sacked by MDP national council in which former President Mohamed Nasheed holds full control.

In the MDP national council’s meeting held at Dhaarubaruge yesterday, a vote of no confidence was taken against MDP elected President Dr. Didi and Vice President Alhan Fahmy. The no confidence motion against the two leaders was tabled by Henveru Dhekunu MP Hamid AbdulGhafoor. The motion was supported by former President Mohamed Nasheed’s close associate and his Executive Secretary of President’s Office Mohamed Ziyad (Ziyatte).

While 72 members from the 73 present voted in favour of the motion tabled by Hamid AbdulGhafoor against MDP elected President Dr. Didi, lawyer Hisaan Hassan voted against it.

In the vote taken against the party’s elected Vice President Alhan Fahmy, 69 members from the 72 present voted in favour of the no confidence motion. Four members including MP Ali Waheed, Hisaan and Sarangu Adam Manik abstained from voting.

Meanwhile, according to some analysts MDP President Dr. Didi and Vice President Alhan Fahmy has been at loggerheads with former President Nasheed and both individuals had voiced reservations against MDPs militant actions since Nasheed's resignation. Both had advocated participation in all-party talks and finding a peaceful resolution to MDP's woes. According to analysts, Alhan Fahmy's "crime against MDP" that triggered Nasheed to engineer a no-confidence vote against him was a motion to Peoples’ Majlis to investigate the very same coup allegation that MDP itself is investigating. However, the rest of MDP MPs except a few, have opposed Alhan Fahmy's motion and obstructed the parliamentary subcommitee from undertaking the investigation.
