All claims that international community does not recognize present govt is now obsolete- Abbas
-You can count on us’ say the UN SG

Press Secretary Abbas Adil Riza has stated that all accusations that the international community does not recognize the present government of the Maldives have now become obsolete.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily regarding the meeting of the Secretary-General with President Dr Mohamed Waheed, on the sideline of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, Press Secretary Abbas said that the UN Secretary-General Mr Ban Ki-moon stated in the meeting that the Maldives can count on the UN for support in consolidating democracy in the Maldives and in the country’s efforts to transform into a low-carbon economy.

Abbas said that this closes down all doors of those who accuse the present government of being illegitimate.

“Earlier also they were making these accusations not that they do not accept the government of President Dr.Waheed rather they just want to deceive the people by making such blatant accusations,” he said.

Meanwhile during the meeting of the UN Secretary General, President Waheed briefed the Secretary-General on the efforts being made to strengthen the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) that was established to examine the facts and circumstances leading to the transfer of power on 7 February 2012.

The President expressed the Government’s appreciation for the positive role the UN has been playing on consolidating democracy in the Maldives.

President Waheed and the Secretary General discussed a range of issues including sustainable development, renewable energy, and climate change.

During the discussions, the President assured the Secretary-General that the Maldives will continue with its strong stand on creating global awareness on the dangers of climate change, and in protecting and promoting human rights internationally.
