There’s no law that restricts the implementation of death penalty- Home Minister

Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that there is no law that restricts the implementation of the death penalty.

Speaking at the meeting held between the heads of the justice system regarding he increase in the gang related crimes in the Maldives, Minister Jameel said that all have come to an agreement to solve the gang related violence.

“Whether death penalty upon murderers is the best penalty or not and if not whether to change that. There is no law that restricts the implementation of the death penalty. If there is then this should be discussed in the Majlis and a solution should be reached through these discussions. What I am saying is that we will not hesitate to implement the penalties decided by the Judges according to the law,” he said.

Underscording the importance of implementing the court verdicts on criminals, Dr. Jameel said , “If the penalty is to put them behind bars for 25 years then it should be 25 years. If it is 12 years then it should be 12 years. They should be made able to spend their time in the jail. This was mentioned in the discussion.”

At the meeting, the participants concurred to expedite implementing immediate measures to find an urgent solution to the matter.

Furthermore, decisions were made to withdraw leniency and create a non-tolerant attitude to serious criminal offences.
