No officials discussed on holding an early election-
President
President Mohamed Waheed has said that that during his visit to the UK no government officials of the UK discussed with him regarding holding an early presidential election.
President Dr Waheed said this while speaking to the press after his arrival back in Male’ yesterday evening, on conclusion of his official visit to the UK.
Answering a question raised by Miadhu Daily, President Dr. Waheed said that he met some officials of the Commonwealth and also met with the British Prime Minister David Cameron but none of them spoke to him regarding holding an early presidential election.
“Some reporters did ask me regarding snap elections, but no government officials discussed with me regarding the matter. My replies to the queries raised by them reporters will be now available on many of the medias,” he said.
The President made this visit to attend the Diamond Jubilee functions of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth.
During his visit, President Waheed and the First Lady attended the National Service of Thanksgiving in honour of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, followed by a lunch hosted by British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, The Rt Hon William Hague MP. The President and the First Lady also attended a luncheon hosted by Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma, in honour of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.
As part of his visit, President Dr Mohamed Waheed gave interviews to UK media outlets, and later met with UK-based Maldivian students and families as well.
On arrival at the Official Jetty in Male’ this evening, President Waheed met with the local media and answered some questions posed to him.
