Maldives Police Service has leaked an audio conversation of former President Mohamed Nasheed encouraging violence against the Police.

The recording of a phone conversation involving former President Nasheed and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group member MP Mariya Ahmed Didi was leaked by the Police at a press conference held at Iskandharu Koshi.

In the phone conversation which was recorded by the Police under a court warrant, Nasheed is heard to say that “I think the best thing to do is, if we can get together a fighting gang, to get them to go out and fight. Because I really think that the solution is to fight. If we can get a group, they should be sent out to fight. Find a fighters gang in Male’ and get them to assault the Police. This is what I think is right. I don’t know if we can find such a group. But I want them attacked”, in reply to Mariya who informs Nasheed that MDP protesters were being restrained by the Police.

According to the Police, the phone conversation was recorded through a court warrant following an intelligence report received in May 29. The police informed the media that the phone conversation of Nasheed and Mariya took place on the day the Police tried to dismantle Usfasgandu.

Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz noted that many attacks have been plotted against the law enforcement officers following Nasheed and MDP’s incitement of violence on the Police.
