Sovereignty can be preserved by becoming self sufficient- Gasim
Jumhooree Party leader, Gasim Ibrahim has said that the sovereignty of the Maldives can be preserved and maintained with the people becoming self sufficient.
Gasim Ibrahim made this remark answering a question raised by Miadhu Daily in relation to the occasion of the 47th Independence Day of the Maldives. He said that although today we are marking the 47th Independence Day of the country, Maldives has a long history of independence.
Gasim Ibrahim said that the Maldivian people are blessed in many ways in this regard compared to other countries. “Other countries were subjected to colonization and subjugation for many years. However Maldives only lost the state sovereignty and independence only twice for about 17 years. Other than those 17 years Maldives has always been an independent state,” he said.
He noted that Maldives was officially granted with Independence on 26 July 1965, from that day onwards Maldives has maintained its independence.
“Freedom and independence is not the freedom to do and say everything that one desires. However true freedom and independence is the economical independence,” he said.
