We are not perfect but we live in a damn good democracy: President Waheed

President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the people of Maldives now live in a good democracy although it is not perfect. The President made this remark on his official Facebook page.

“Maldives has greater civil and political freedoms than most other countries. We are not perfect but we live in a damn good democracy,” he said in his Facebook status.

While addressing the nation at the official function Thursday evening, to determine and declare the time-honoured sighting of the moon, which marks the beginning of the fasting month, the President advised the people to respect the fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed by the National Constitution, since it is in doing so, that national peace and harmony are secured.

President Waheed also noted that the universal aim of establishing all laws and legislations in all countries is, to ensure the general welfare and security of its people.

Stating that a lot was still needed to establish and strengthen a modern democratic system in the Maldives, the President said that he would not take a step back in accomplishing it.

President assured that his government would not pardon an offender, or prosecute an innocent, to achieve political motives. The President also assured that the state would not back down in upholding the rule of law.
