Nasheed would have led the biggest coup in history if the power had not been transferred – Abbas

Press Secretary Abbas Adil Riza has said that the former President Mohamed Nasheed would have led the biggest coup and rebellion in history of the power had not been transferred on 7 February.

Abbas said that the transfer of power on 7 February was a blessing of Allah upon the people because if not for it Nasheed would have abolished the Judicial Service Commission on that day and would have started a “street justice system.” He said that this has been revealed from many documents signed by the former President Nasheed.

Abbas told Miadhu Daily that during that time some cases raised to the Judicial Service Commission signed by some judges were done under this sinister plan hatched by the former President.

Abbas said that he does not desire to refute the rhetoric of Nasheed and the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) but some has to take the responsibility of mentioning something when a people who claim democracy are getting drowned.

“See, now they are claiming that MDP will not run in the elections if Nasheed cannot partake in it. So to see MDP running in an election should Nasheed be left unprosecuted although he is responsible for the country wide arson on Police stations and courthouses? Is this the democracy that the people are seeking for?” he said.

Abbas said that if this is the democracy that Nasheed and his supporters are seeking to restore in the Maldives than the people does not want it in the Maldives ever.
