Government will not be involved in any discussions held to save Nasheed from his crimes- Abbas

Press Secretary Abbas Adil Riza has said that the government will not partake in any discussions held to save the former President Mohamed Nasheed from getting prosecuted for his crimes.

Speaking at a VTV program, Abbas said that the government has promised the people with establishing a constitutional rule. He said that the government will not take any steps back from fulfilling this promise.

Abbas said that MDP and Nasheed’s supporters are now trying to save him from getting prosecuted for the crimes he committed during his rule and those committed after his resignation. He said that they will not be given any opportunity to stall the prosecution. Abbas said that the government will not discriminate between the people and therefore will not partake in any discussions to be held in defence of Nasheed from getting prosecuted.

He said that the government will not take a different stand even if the opposition create chaos and strife and stall the Peoples’ Majlis.

“MDP is gathering near Dhiraagu every night to create an environment for crime. They want Nasheed to be a free man. They want to revile the honour of the independent institutions to the world. They want foreign parties to interfere with our internal issues,” he said.

“150 people gathering near Dhiraagu every night cannot be considered to be the representatives of the people. Compared to the Maldivian population it is nothing,” he said.
