Border traffic may have to be disrupted if board control system is not launched: Controller
Controller of the Immigration and Emigration Dr. Mohamed Ali has warned that the incoming and outgoing foreign passenger traffic may have to be disrupted if the border control system is not launched in the near future.
The controller made this remark while the High Court recently issued a court order to stop the establishment of the Boarder Control System.
Dr. Mohamed Ali said that the present system used by the immigration and emigration department is a very simple system which has been used in Canada some 13 years ago. He said that the present one is outdated and does not allow the monitoring of deported foreigners and the incoming and outgoing traffic. He said that it is now possible for deported individuals to come back to Maldives without getting noticed.
Dr. Mohamed Ali stressed that the incoming and outgoing traffic may have to be stopped if a proper border system is not established so as to ensure proper security measures are taken.
The controller said that if there is any corruption involved in the border control system establishment project than those responsible should be put to justice. However, he said that it is not a reason to halt the project. He said that no group which works in the best interest of the country will attempt to obstruct the installment of the border control system when it will result in dire consequences if it is halted.
