Shariah is superior to all other systems, and we will not allow any contradiction to it- AG

"Shariah is superior to all other systems, and we will not allow any contradiction to it,” says Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor.

Attorney General Azima said that if there is any legal hindrance to implementing the death penalty on murderers then the government will initiate work to bring rectification to such an issue. She said that the government is currently also researching the issue.

Azima added that the death penalty on murderers is not only practiced in Islamic countries but rather it is also implemented in other world renowned countries. She added that this can be studied and the death penalty can be implemented in Maldives.

“There is no need for debates. The death penalty on murderers which is revealed in the Islamic Shariah is the perfect penalty.  But since this is a matter of taking a life and when implemented the verdict cannot be taken back, it should be implemented by eliminating all doubts in such a case,” Azima said.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain recently said that the death penalty is not a new issue in the Maldives and there is no legal barrier in the current system to implementing the death penalty.
