Our nationhood, independence and state
assets have been snatched from us: Gasim
Leader of opposition Jumhooree Party (JP), Gasim Ibrahim has said that the nationhood of the people and their independence and state assets have been snatched away from the people.
In the special meeting held by 23 December coalition to celebrate National Day, the local philanthropist Gasim said that the national hero Mohamed Thakurufaanu defeated the Portuguese waging a jihad with patience for six years. He said that the country needs Mujahids who will follow the legacy of Mohamed Thakurufaanu to defend the independence of the country.
Gasim noted that the current actions of the government make it hard to believe that Maldives has a constitutional rule. He said that the people are living in fear because of the despotic actions of the government.
Gasim said that President Mohamed Nasheed boasted to give full cooperation to the Attorney General yesterday at the function to mark the country’s 69th National Day, when he himself has not obeyed the court order of the Supreme Court.
“Our nation is failing. This nation was established by our ancestors through their hard work. It is our obligation to inherit this nationhood just as our ancestors passed this on to us,” he said.
Gasim said that peace in the society will prevail only if court verdicts are obeyed by the government. He said that today the government is waging the same war that Andre Andre waged against the people of Maldives.
He accused the government of trying to influence the rulings of the courts by intimidating the judges using their usual scare mongering tactics.
