President Nasheed Sends Sympathy to the President of Philippines and Brazil
President Mohamed Nasheed has sent a message of sympathy to President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III of Philippines, following the loss of lives and devastation caused by heavy flooding and landslides in Philippines.
“The Government and the people of the Maldives and I are deeply saddened to learn about the loss of lives resulting from a landslide which occurred in Pantukan, Compostela Valley province of South Philippines. We send our sincere condolences to the members of the bereaved families, and our profound sympathy to you, the Government and the people of the Philippines, especially those who are directly affected by the tragedy,” the President said in his message to President Aquino.
The death toll from killer floods in the Philippines rose to 1,249 on Tuesday, more than a week after the disaster struck, with officials expecting more corpses to be found.
More than 376,000 people were displaced by the storm and almost 55,000 are still huddled in crowded makeshift evacuation centres.
President Mohamed Nasheed has sent a message of sympathy to President Dilma Rouseff of Brazil, following the loss of lives and devastation caused by heavy flooding and landslides in Brazil.
“I was deeply distressed to learn about the heavy flooding and landslides in South Eastern Brazil causing loss of lives, extensive damage to homes and property and widespread destruction. 1 would like to send my profound sympathy to you, the Government and the people of Brazil, especially those who were directly affected by the tragedy. I wish the recovery efforts every success and commend the tenacity of the Brazilian people in the face of such tragedy,” President Nasheed said in his message to President Rouseff.
Floods and landslides caused by heavy rain in south-eastern Brazil have killed at least six people and forced thousands from their homes.
