President Waheed appeals to Disallow Violence and Disruption in the Country

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has called on the people not to allow or assist acts of violence and dispute in the country. The President made this appeal while addressing the people of Fuvahmulah yesterday evening, as part of his current visit to the island.

Noting that there was a minority of people constantly trying to create conflict and discord among the people, President Waheed said that these acts should never be tolerated.

In his speech, the President stressed that civil disorder has never been experienced in the Maldives, and that unethical political competition was never beneficial to a country.

Speaking in this regard, the President pointed out how the differences faced in Fuvahmulah were resolved through peaceful dialogue. He also said that the people of Maldives would not accept people who created dispute in the country, as it was too unified a nation to be threatened with the risk of division among the people. Further, the President reiterated the prosecution of people responsible for damaging public property.

In his speech, President Waheed also revealed the government’s plans for the development of Fuvahmulah; namely, the construction of sports fields, facilitating job opportunities and higher education opportunities for the youth, and development of the Fuvammulaku Airport.

The President also said that the government was working to solve the erosion issues faced on the island, as well as establish proper water and sewerage systems. The President guaranteed the people that the benefits provided by the former government will be continued.

In his speech, the President reassured that his government would deliver the constitutional rights of the people. Further, the President stated that “people stood up against the government because democracy was challenged.”
