Health sector will make tremendous improvements by the end of
this year- Dr. Jamsheed
Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed has said that the health sector will make tremendous improvements by the end of the current year.
Minister Dr. Jamsheed said this while addressing the people of Fuvahmulah yesterday evening, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Waheed’s current visit to the island.
“I do not want to be hasty and bring the only the changes I want. What we are seeing is the consequences of brining sudden changes to ongoing processes. This is the reason why I criticized the changes brought by the former administration. Changes should be brought only after much study and research,” he said.
Dr. Jamsheed said that there are many retired professionals now working voluntarily in the health service. He said that they are using their expertise and experience to study the current state of the health sector. He said that a report will be published and publicized within two days.
The Minister said that the changes to the current health policies will be made only after considering the facts mentioned in this report.
Dr. Jamsheed said that the Maldives’ health sector has made commendable achievements in the past 20 years. However, the sudden changes to the system by the former regime have sent back the health sector of the country several years back.
“In 2010, 9 mothers died during labour. If two had died, then the millennium goals would have been a failure. In 2011, a record number of people died from Dengue fever,” he said.
The Minister noted that the main problem in every hospital that he visited was the problem of mismanagement. He assured that the current government will work to establish quality health care system in the country for the well being of the people.
