On 13 February, the Chinese Ambassador H.E. Mr Yu Hongyao has met with President Dr Mohamed Waheed.

During the meeting at the President’s Office, President Waheed briefed Ambassador Yu about the current situation. Ambassador Yu congratulated President Waheed on his assuming the President of the Republic of Maldives.

Ambassador Yu said:

“What happened recently in the Maldives are internal affairs of the country. China and the Maldives are friendly neighbours. We respect the choice of the Maldivians, and hope to see the Maldives in peace, stability, harmony and prosperity. On the basis of Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, the Chinese government would like to work closely with the new Maldivian government towards the stable, healthy and smooth growth of the bilateral relations.”
