Maldivian Democratic Party supporters plan militant style insurgency
The Vice President at the time, Dr.Waheed who is known for his dedicated work to the United Nations also called on President Nasheed to free the Criminal Court Judge and to respect the constitutional rights of the people in Maldives. This led to Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters issuing warnings and threats to the Vice President against further comments on the political situation. The Vice President being from a different political party, kept to his position that the Government, nor the Army has the right to violate the constitution of the country in any difficulty it faces.
To the Maldivian public and opposition's astonishment, the police which have been carrying out orders to arrest Government critics for the past two months had now joined the protest against Nasheed calling for his immedate resignation. Nasheed went to meet the protesting police officers, however they drove him back with their chants for him to resign. Police sources which we spoke to have said that the police were frustrated and angry of being used as a political tool by Nasheed against his political opponents and to violate the constutional rights of Maldivians. The police did not see why they should stop peaceful protests just because they were critical of Nasheed or his Party. This is when they decided to join the protest before the country turns into a dictatorship in the disguise of a democracy.
Nasheed that same day told the army that he had lost the support of the police and some also within the army. Hence Nasheed had no choice but to resign. His legal secretary was at his office when the resignation letter was written and she claimed that there was no pressure on Nasheed to resign. However after leaving his office and meeting with his party leaders in his house, Nasheed backtracked on his decision to resign and claimed that he was ousted "at gun point". This was a suprise to many Maldivians which our reporters talked with because according to them the Maldivian army does not carry guns unless there is a foreign threat.
International Media such as CNN, Al Jazeera, BBC and others were late to arrive in the Maldives as they only reported on the situation a day later. Ex-President of Maldives (Nasheed) used this for his advantage as he went on to claim that he was forced out at gun point. He then organized a protest to confont the police after calling for militant type insurgency against his Vice President who took over the post of President after Nasheed resigned. This protest which was led by Nasheed and his Maldivian Democratic Party went looting Government buildings, burning down police stations and vehicles. The police had no choice but to crack down on the violent protest with an iron fist before it took any life of Maldivians. Several police personals were stabbed with knives by gangs of Nasheed's supporters.
Nasheed has continued to call for violent protest eventhough members within his own party has called for him to step down as the Party leader and allow the party to start fresh and prepare for elections in 2013. However Nasheed has said that there will be no new election within his party until he and his supporters see it fit.
Maldives is known as one of the best tourist destinations in the world.
