China hopes for stable, healthy ties with the Maldives
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin saidMonday that China hopes to work closely with the Maldives government to develop thetwo countries' ties in a stable, healthy and smooth way under the Five Principles ofPeaceful Coexistence.
In response to a media request on China's view on the Maldives' turbulent domesticsituation and change in leadership, Liu said that as a close neighbor of the Maldives,China respects the choice of the people of the Maldives and hopes the Maldives canrealize national stability, social harmony and economic development.
China, as a friendly neighbor of the Maldives, sincerelyhopes for peace, stability and development in the country, a Foreign Ministryspokesman said Wednesday.
Liu Weimin made the remarks at a regular press conference when asked about therecent political turmoil in the island country.
The Chinese embassy in the Maldives has reminded Chinese compatriots andChinese-funded organizations there to improve security, keep a distance fromdemonstrations and protests, Liu said.
The Department of Consular Affairs of the Foreign Ministry has also released securitywarning, he said.
So far, the Chinese people and organizations in the Maldives are safe and there hasbeen no reports of casualties, Liu said.
Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed announced his resignation on Tuesday,following overnight violence and protests. Former Vice President Mohommad Wahidhas taken office as the new President.
