Resigned SAARC SG calls the Majlis to impeach President Nasheed

Former SAARC Secretary General and first Attorney General of President Nasheed's Government Diyana Saeed has called on the People's Majlis to impeach the President for gross violation of the Constitution. She said this addressing the large opposition rally gathered at artificial beach last night to condemn the President for arresting  Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed against the Constitution and for not obeying Supreme Court order to release the judge.

Dinyana resigned from the post of SAARC Secretary General last month after criticising the unconstitutional arrest of the judge. Her businessman husband Abdulla Jabir who was chairman of the Fund Raising Committee of the ruling MDP left the party and joined Billionaire Gasim Ibrahim's Jumhoory Partry.

Speaking about the unconstitutional actions of the President, Diyana said the President has snatched the freedom and rights of the people, the judiciary and even the state media. What has he not snatched, Diyana asked the cheering crowd.

Diyana and another 8 women were arrested last week when they staged a peaceful protest at the Jumhoory Square where President Nasheed was arrested in 2008 during the height of the reform process while he and another colleague staged a similar protest.  Nasheed has said during that time it was the place most suitable for such protests and people has the right to protest there.

Diyana sustained some injuries during the arrest and she said the Police handled her very brutally.

The former Secretary General said all efforts will be made to impeach the President in the Majlis process and she will also find ways for the impeachment through the courts.

Besides the judiciary, opposition parties, prominent lawyers, independent institutions have called for the immediate release of the judge. The UN and International Commission of Jurists have also joined these calls.  But President Mohamed Nasheed says the country's judicial system is unable to regulate itself and he is accusing the judge of political bias.

Several  political leaders have also said that President Nasheed no longer has the legal capacity to remain in the post of the president and they now address him as former president.
