If the media supports unrest, the
government won’t hear the criticisms needed for development: Nasheed
President Mohamed Nasheed has underscored the importance of freedom of speech and constructive criticism for the development and progress of the country. In this regard, he said that if TV channels continue to support unrest and violence 24/7 nonstop then the government will be unable to hear the constructive criticisms necessary for the development and progress of Maldives.
President Nasheed made this remark speaking at “Kolhumadulu, Hahdhunmathi- the colours of progress” ceremony.
The President said that the competitive political parties in the country do not hold the government responsible by constructive and productive criticism regarding the many projects of the government.
He said that the personal agendas and the greed for power will not bring the progress that the country is witnessing today.
President Nasheed said that no government of the Maldives will ever be toppled by street protests. He said that this fact will be most clear to the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
“The people of this country and the government will not be the least worried over a hundred people coming out to the streets of Male’ and damage businesses and disturb the locals,” he said. He said that the government will always accept the thoughts expressed by the majority. He said that the government will never accept anything voiced out by street thugs armed with wooden planks.
