No one can withhold the tongues of religious scholars: Sheikh Imran

Opposition Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdullah has said that it is not possible for anyone to withhold the tongues of religious scholars.

Sheikh Imran made this remark in view of the recent threats of the Vice President of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Alhan Fahmy saying that the government might have to withhold the tongues of the religious scholars if they voice out against the government.

Sheikh Imran said that it was not MDP or Alhan Fahmy who gave freedom to the religious scholars to preach the religion. He said that it was Allah who gave victory to scholars because of their hard work and toil fighting for their rights.

Alhan gave the warning to the religious scholars at the public rally of MDP held last evening at the strong-house of the party.

The Vice President of the ruling party criticized the religious scholars of the opposition Adhaalath Party. His attacks were mostly directed towards Sheikh Imran and Sheikh Shaheem. He stated that his party has the capability to pass a law at the Peoples’ Majlis to withhold the tongues of the religious scholars.

“The top officials of the Adhaalath Party do now believe in democracy. They are a bunch of heretics. They want to cause mischief and discord in the country using religion as their tool. If this is continues we might have to pass a law to ban religious scholars from giving religious edicts (Fatwas),” he said.

Alhan said that President Nasheed came to power with the ijmaa’ (unianimous agreement) of the religious scholars.

Sheikh Imran rebuked this claim and said that it is better for Alhan to join a university to study the religious terminology. He said that the religious scholars supported President Nasheed with the hopes of protecting the Islamic Unity because the President vowed to consult the religious scholars if there arises any religious issue that the President wants to continue. He said that almost all of the religious scholars have annulled the testimony because the government have no respect for the constitution and law.

Rebutting the claims of Hafiz Zaki, the President of the religious wing of MDP that the President is trying to save the judges from the hell-fire, religious scholars said that “Hafiz Zaki is not a religious scholar. He is just a memoriser of the Qur’an. So he should take heed in making judgements regarding heaven and hell.”
