Majlis Approves for the Maldives to participate in the United Nations (UN) Convention against Transnational Organized Crimenational Organized Crime


Following review by the Committee on National Security, Majlis today approved to the Maldives becoming signatory to the United Nations (UN) Convention against Transnational Organised Crime. A majority of 50 MPs voted in favour of approval.

Following review by the Economic Affairs Committee, the report on the Declaration tabled by Mohamed Rasheed, MP for Machangolhi South which called for dissemination of subsidies allocated to fishermen from a 100 million Rufiyaa from the 2012 State Budget was approved with a majority of 46 MPs.

Six reports presented to the Majlis floor, were approved in today’s Sitting. The reports were the report on the Amendments proposed to Annex 2 of the Standing Orders submitted by the General Purpose Committee, which the approval of a majority of 53 MPs in favour, 1 abstention and 0 against; the report on the Employment Tribunal Audit Report Financial Year 2010 as submitted by the Public Affairs Committee, which the approval of a majority of 49 MPs in favour, 0 abstentions and 0 against; the report on the Prosecutor General’s Office Audit Report Financial Year 2010 as submitted by the Public Affairs Committee, with the approval of a majority of 46 MPs in favour, 3 abstentions and 2 against, the report on the Police Integrity Commission Audit Report for Financial Year 2010 as submitted by the Public Affairs Committee, with the approval of a majority of 51 MPs,  2 abstentions and 0 against; the report on the Attorney General’s Office Audit Report Financial Year 2010 as submitted by the Public Affairs Committee, with the approval of a majority of 50 MPs,  2 abstentions and 0 against and the report on the Human Rights Commission Audit Report Financial Year 2010 as submitted by the Public Affairs Committee, with the approval of a majority of 50 MPs,  2 abstentions and 0 against.

Further, the report on the Amendments to Article 16 (b) of the Standing Orders of Majlis was sent back to the General Purpose Committee for re- review with the approval of a majority of 44 MPs.

The Bill tabled by Riyaz Rasheed, MP for Vilufushi to bring amendment to the 2009 law, specifying circumstances where the financial benefits could be denied to ex-Presidents was rejected by the Majlis at today’s Sitting.
