MDP will not be given opportunity to make CoNI’s report a shield to create unrest- Abbas

Spokesperson of the government, Abbas Adil Riza has said that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will not be given the opportunity to make the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) as a shield to create unrest and disorder.

Abbas said that the Commission of National Inquiry was established to make an independent and impartial investigation into developments in the Maldives from 14 January 2012 to 8 February 2012 and the reality of the events of February 7 which lead to the transfer of power and whether anyone is guilty.

“If the report concludes that a person is guilty then the necessary actions will be taken by the state authority. If a police officer was found to be guilty the Police Integrity Commission will take action against that officer. If other than them were found guilty than the Prosecutor General will prosecute such a person or persons,” he said.

Abbas said that no one will be given the opportunity to do anything against the law and constitution.

Abbas noted that the former President Mohamed Nasheed is an instigator to terrorist acts and incites the people to violence. He said that because of Nasheed’s bad influence the state had to prosecute more than 200 people charged of different crimes. He stressed that the government will never give the opportunity for the other youths to be dragged down that path of crime.

The government spokesperson further said that no person who loves the nation sincerely would ever call the people to terrorism.

“Criminal offences are mentioned in detail in the law. No person is allowed to perpetrate crimes,” he said.

Abbas also noted that the former President Nasheed is now preparing his followers to create disorder and unrest in the country regardless of the outcome of the report of the commission.

Meanwhile Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said last night that he and his followers will return to their homes after brining the “coup” leaders to justice when the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) issues their final report on August 31.

Speaking at the Usfasgandu rally of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held to celebrate “Black Friday”, former President Nasheed said that he would not stop his work against injustice “until justice is served and true freedom is established.”

“I will not stop this work against injustice until true freedom is established. We will stand up. We will rise. We will establish freedom of our people. We are a people who came out for a change. In deed will not return back to our homes after bringing the coup leaders to justice on the day the commission issues its investigative report,” Nasheed said.

Nasheed said that August 12 and 13 are the days when the people seized power over the government and on those days the people believed that they are the power.

He said that the people got their encouragement from that day and he also got support from that day. He said that the “Black Friday” was an oppressive day and the people believed that they can topple the then tyrant regime.
