MDP claims to have stopped ‘direct action’ protests to deceive the world: Govt

Spokesperson of the government, Abbas Adil Riza has said that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is claiming to have stopped the ‘direct action’ protests to deceive the international community.

Abbas said that this claim made by some people is baseless and the MDP has not specifically stated that the party has decided to suspend the street protests against the government in their media statement. He said that the government will not trust the content of such media statements.

The government spokesperson said that the President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik will not participate in the all party talks until the government is fully assured that MDP really has stopped the protests.

He stressed that the MDP did not officially inform the government of their decision though they informed the media. He said that the President does not want to participate in talks with groups that work outside the bounds of law and order.

Abbas said that it is too soon to speak about how much days the President will spend to assure that the MDP has really suspended their protests since MDP has always been known for their contradicting behavior.
