Where was Canada when Nasheed violated the constitution during his rule?: Fuwad
Gasim
State Minister of Fisheries, Fuwad Gasim has that it is shocking and questionable that Canada and other states were silent when the former President Mohamed Nasheed violated the constitution and arrested political leaders without due right during his rule.
“Where was Canada when Nasheed violated the constitution and law during his rule? Why did not they raise their concerns then?,” he asked.
Fuwad said this in view of the recent statement of Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird expressing his concern over what he called the government’s “politically motivated threats to arrest its opponents.”
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Fuwad said that no matter what Nasheed and MDP tells the world, Nasheed is taken to court or any other institution in relation to his criminal activities. He said that when Nasheed is summoned to any institution he would be informed of the reasons for it in detail.
“However, during his regime this was not the case. He made baseless accusations. Arrested many politicians. Imprisoned them. Strangely none of these caught the attention of Canada or other states. They did not raise their ‘deep concerns’. Nasheed broke the law on a number of times and challenged the constitution,” he said.
“I wonder if the Canadian government would not take any action against people who perpetrate crime and instigate violence and incite the people to attack the law enforcement agencies. I would like to ask Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird if this is how it is in Canada,” Fuwad said.
Fuwad said that Canada and other states and organisation whom are speaking to protect Nasheed should answer these questions. They should clarify that “democracy is to serve justice and to bring criminals to justice regardless who it is.”
