Government will welcome MDP if they are ready for talks

Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Abbas Adil Riza, has  said that the government will welcome the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) if the party is ready for dialogue to peacefully solve the problems raised after the arrest of Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdullah Judge by the MDP government.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Abbas said that MDP still have the opportunity to work in association with the government. He said the government was ready for whatever talks necessary to calm the political tensions.

President’s Office Spokesperson however noted that the government will not compromise with any people who are involved in terrorism. He said that the government will investigate such cases and will put them to justice.

According to DhiTV, the MDP have decided to compromise with the government. After the peace talks Hamid AbdulGhafoor of MDP said that the party hopes to continue with the call to hold early elections even if the agenda of the talks are postponed.

Hamid said that MDP was informed that MDP’s proposal to participate other political parties who are not invited for the talks will be acted upon only after going for a vote among the current parties participating in the talks. He added that despite this all of the political parties are ready for dialogue.

After the talks, Dhivehi Qaumee Party, DQP’s Deputy Leader MP Riyaz Rasheed said criticized MDP and said that MDP is very insincere. He said that MDP should be honest and sincere if they want the peace talks to be fruitful.

Peace talks next meeting is scheduled to be held on May fifth. Meanwhile, in view of the former President Nasheed’s visit to India this week, Indian official spokesperson said India hopes that engagement with all stakeholders in the Maldives will facilitate a constructive dialogue among all political parties and help in bringing stability to the country in line with the Road map of 16 February drawn up by President Dr. Mohamed Waheed.

Many political analysts believe that India’s support of the constructive dialogue initiated by President Dr. Waheed shows that the policies of the current government are accepted by India in contrast to the statements of CMAG.
