Adaaran resorts maldives organizes effective communication
skills workshop for contineous improvement
Understanding the importance of developing staff communication skills Adaaran Resorts recently partnered with Corporate Skills to organize a 6 day “Effective Communication Skills” workshop. Conductaed from the 15th to 20th April 2012 at Adaaran ‘Select’ Hudhuranfushi the workshop saw the participation of 35 Adaaran staff members from all resorts in the chain and included staff from every department; Front Office, Human Resources, House Keeping, F & B department etc. Facilitated by CEO Corporate Skills – Ms. Shyamila Hettiarachchi and Director Corporate Skills- Ms. Nirmali Hettiarachchi, the training was conducted using a participatory, learner-centric approach, including group discussions, small buzz groups, ice breakers, brainstorming, energizing exercises, role playing, feedback from participants and seminar wrap-up and reflection.
The objectives of the training workshop included-Business English Grammar and its communicative power; Tone your voice/writing; Trash the wasted words; Problem solving techniques; Ways of asking and giving information.; Effective Speaking and techniques to make your speech more effective; Dealing with complaints and Business etiquette.

Corporate Skills said “We started with a pre evaluation to determine the
baseline capacity level of the participants. Since the staff included many
different nationalities and cultures their capacities varied greatly. So we
structured the program to meet the objectives of the resort and maximize the
potential of the individual participant. In my experience as a trainer this was
a very energetic group with many strengths and a great willingness to learn,
improve, and contribute to the development of Adaaran Resorts.”
Despite the resort running at full capacity the workshop enjoyed full participation and was fruitfully completed with good cooperation between the facilitators and the participants.
Ms Sophia Yang, Guest Relations Executive, Adaaran ‘Prestige’ Vadoo said “We learned many new things, especially the importance of clear, good communication. Problem solving techniques in particular are very useful as this is something we have to do on a daily basis.”
Sharing her views participant and Guest Relations Executive at Adaaran ‘Prestige’ Vadoo, Ms Niusha Nasarulha said “This training made me realize that communication skills are important for managing our own professional development and career growth.”
Mr.Kapila Jayasuriya Senior Guest Relations Executive, Adaaran ‘Select’ Hudhuranfiushi said “ The training was an eye opener, I learned the importance of being an active listener, making good eye contact and using appropriate volume and tone.”
Following the 5 day workshop participants were ranked based on performance and awarded certificates classified as Distinction, Merit and Pass,
Mr. Upul Peiris, Chief Operating Officer Adaaran Resorts said “We organized this initiative because communication is one of the most vital skills needed in the hospitality industry. We get people from all around the world, from different backgrounds. Therefore, it is very important to have good communication skills in order to communicate amongst each other and serve our guests properly in the standards expected by the management. Communication helps an employee to share information, cooperate and collaborate with other people, understand the tasks, deal with the clients and give feedback to the management. The staff showed great potential, and overwhelmed by the result of 10 achieving distinction and 17 participant qualifying with Merit was a very successful initiative and we look forward to implementing more initiatives of this nature.” In his speech he also made special mention of the General managers namely Mr Asim Mohamed, Mr. Moosa Didi, Mr Mohamed Ali and Mr. Badhiya Gunathilaka for the challenge taken to release staff in spite of resorts having heavy occupancy.
