Government will not withdraw membership from Commonwealth-
President
President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the government has not though about withdrawing Maldives membership from the Commonwealth.
The President made this statement speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Wednesday afternoon.
In view of some calls to withdraw Maldives membership from the Commonwealth, the President said that it is not the official decision of the government but are personal opinions of some members of the government coalition.
He said that the Commonwealth statements are acceptable but the decisions will be taken by the people.
President Dr Waheed thanked the Members of the People’s Majlis for the strong support and endorsement given to the government yesterday by approving the Vice President and the Cabinet appointed by the President.
In his remarks, the President particularly noted the many distinguished services by Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen and expressed pleasure that he was approved by the Parliament as the Vice President. He added he was confident the Vice President Deen would play a vital role towards national reconciliation.
Vice President Deen also spoke at the press conference, which was attended by Cabinet ministers, several members of the Parliament, including the Speaker.
