VP
The current situation in the Maldives is the saddest political situation in the history of the country and this situation can only alleviated by constructive dialogue and unity, says Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen.
Vice President made this statement speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office yesterday after getting approved by the Peoples’ Majlis.
Vice President said he accepted the position only to serve the country and the people. He added that he would treat all citizens equally and affirmed that he would uphold the values of Islam and the Constitution.
He also pledged full support to the President and said he would do the job as Vice President to the best of his ability.
Vice President Deen reiterated that the disunity and differences can only be solved by peaceful dialogue. He said that the constitution also should be amended if early elections are to be held. He noted that the country is suffering from many economic drawbacks and these economic issues also should be solved.
“In past Maldives has witnessed much such political unrest. However, the political differences are not solves by bringing a foreign party and submitting to what they dictate on the people. Maldivians should and can solve their own problems without the need to bring any foreign parties,” he said.
Moreover, the Vice President expressed his gratitude to the members of the Peoples’ Majlis for their support and he assured them that he will make them proud for the confidence they have put in him.
Deen was approved as the Vice President by a unanimous vote by the 45 members of the Majlis present at the session yesterday.
