Alhan condemns Nasheed’s anti-Islamic views revealed on foreign media

Vice President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Feydhoo constituency MP Alhan Fahmy has condemned the former President Mohamed Nasheed’s anti-Islamic views revealed on foreign media.

‘I condemn President Nasheed's anti-Islamic views revealed on foreign media. This is sad and disastrous!,’Alhan updated his twitter account’s status yesterday.

During Nasheed’s visit to India, it is reported by Washington Post that he said that he changed the school curriculum to make it “more balanced and not so Islamic” and proposed a new penal code less dependent on Islamic sharia law.

Nasheed  also noted that he restored diplomatic relations with Israel that had been suspended for three decades under Gayoom, advocated closer ties with the United States and Maldives’s giant neighbor India, introduced benefits for single mothers and tried to protect women forced by Islamic radicals to wear burqas and veils.

In view of these statements, Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed said that the statements of former President Nasheed pose a threat and a danger to the people.

Minister Jameel said that these statements will cause a lot of damage to the people and they will have to face many difficulties when travelling to foreign countries.

President of the Adhaalath Party, Sheikh Imran Abdullah said that the Islamic moral values and principles will prevail in the Maldives despite the concerns of the Nasheed.

“Today Nasheed has exposed the reality of what we have been telling the people about him. He has exposed himself that he is indeed an anti-Islamic bigot. He has admitted that he changed the school curriculum to make it not so Islamic and proposed a new penal code less dependent on Islamic Sharia law,” he said.
