PPM assures their support to Speaker:
MDP won’t be successful in the no confidence vote against Speaker- PPM
Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that they will not let the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) be successful in the no confidence vote against the Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis Abdullah Shahid.
PPM Interim Deputy Leader, Funadhoo constituency MP Abdurraheem Abdullah said that even if the MDP has submitted a no confidence motion against the Speaker Shahid, MDP will not be successful. He said that the party will not support anything that will harm the government coalition.
Abdurraheem noted that MDP has lost their authority in the Majlis and now it is impossible for them to win the no confidence vote against Shahid. He also said that he does not believe that the Speaker is biased in his decisions.
In view of the no confidence motion submitted against the Speaker, leader of the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Ahmed Thasmeen Ali said that MDP is going to put themselves to shame by taking this vote.
Thasmeen said that DRP is the least worried by this and that this is a game of desperation on the party of MDP after their major loss in the recent elections and losing the authority.
Meanwhile, the no confidence motion tabled against Speaker Shahid was signed by 27 MPs from MDP. The motion alleges that Shahid took unilateral decisions without consultation with the political parties represented in Majlis. However, Shahid denies that allegation.
MDP has been at loggerheads with Shahid because he did not support their allegation that President Dr. Mohamed Waheed was not a constitutional leader, and due to his decision to hold the opening of Majlis with President Waheed delivering a State of the Nation Address as prescribed in the constitution.
